You've probably seen Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) on the news, social media or even in your own area. So, why should you be taking note? Luckily, we’ve got a whole report to show you exactly why…
In an increasingly urbanised world, the concept of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) has gained significant attention as a means to improve traffic flow, reduce pollution, and create safer spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. However, like any new idea, LTNs have sparked differing opinions among communities, especially on social media. You’ve probably seen countless tweets flying around with some very strong opinions about how low-traffic measures will affect day-to-day life.
To shed light on this complex topic, we’ve launched a free eBook, "Low Traffic Neighbourhoods: Why Everyone Needs to Take Note." In this comprehensive guide, we explore the varied perspectives surrounding LTNs and delve into the underlying factors that shape these opinions.
Our research, analysing 750,000 data points from 2000 projects, offers valuable insights into LTN opinions. One significant finding is that under 25s exhibit the most positive outlook towards LTNs. This generation, often characterised by environmental consciousness and a desire for sustainable urban living, seems to embrace the potential benefits of LTNs (at least in our data).
Furthermore, the study highlights that individuals who rely on public transport display up to 40% greater positivity towards LTNs. People who personally experience crowded buses and congested roads perhaps want to believe that LTNs can help alleviate these problems. Conversely, respondents who primarily use cars as their mode of transportation tend to express less enthusiasm for LTNs. This contrast in viewpoints emphasizes the importance of understanding the perspectives of different user groups.
Our data shows that people who prefer walking or cycling have a much more positive attitude towards LTNs. This shows how LTNs and cycling infrastructure work together to make safer and easier spaces for active transportation.
To understand how opinions are formed, our eBook explores different factors that influence views on LTNs. We delve into how gender, age, and proximity to LTNs impact perceptions. By understanding the underlying dynamics, authorities can implement tailored strategies to address concerns and garner support for LTN initiatives.
Our eBook not only highlights the importance of gathering data, but also emphasises its practical application in driving better LTN schemes. By gathering data from local communities, authorities can understand their true opinions and ensure that LTNs meet their specific needs. Our guide shows how this data can be used to make decisions and encourage collaboration between authorities and communities.
"Low Traffic Neighbourhoods: Why Everyone Needs to Take Note" offers a comprehensive analysis of the landscape surrounding Low Traffic Neighbourhoods. By understanding the varying opinions across demographics and modes of transport, authorities can foster inclusive dialogue, address concerns, and optimise the benefits of LTNs. Cities must use sustainable and fair urban planning to create healthier, safer, and more livable communities for all. LTNs offer a promising way to achieve this.
